Intel Core 2 Duo , Intel vPro, Intel VIIV, Intel Centrino, Intel Centrino Pro, Intel Core Duo , Intel Core Solo, Intel Core 2 and yes lets not forget Intel Pentium. Those are just the brand names. If we throw in all the model numbers we have one major mess. It is no surprise that very few people can actually keep track of Intel’s processing world.
Intel has major problem with its branding names, the average person has no idea if Intel is referring to platform or a processor. If they do, do they know the diffenece bewtweeen them? Does any one really know what Intel VIIV is? How about Intel vPro, is that a platform a processor or the kitchen sink?
It seems that Intel has finally got the message. "Intel now has a simpler, easier to understand brand selection for business IT and consumers" an Intel spokesperson said.As Intel plans to modify the way it brands its processor in an effort to consolidate and simplify its line-up. Intel will start the rebranding from 1 January 2008.
Under the new branding, Intel's vPro and Viiv platforms will reflect the underlying Core2 micro-architecture. The brands will be known as Core2 vPro and Core2 Viiv.
The Centrino brand will be consolidated to just two chips. The Centrino, Centrino Duo and Centrino Pro lines, which had appeared under five different logos, will now be known as Centrino and Centrino vPro.
At the high end, the Xeon brand will remain the same, while the Itanium 2 brand will be shortened to Itanium. The Core2 family, as well as the Pentium and Celeron brands, will remain the same.
Will all of this make picking out your next Intel computer any simpler? No one really knows, but lets hope that Intel has learnt from its past mistakes and at least will try to simplify things for us simpletons. One thing is for sure, it can’t get any worse
