If Quad Core wasn’t enough, Intel has just introduced the eight-core Dual Socket Extreme Desktop Platform. The new platform supports two Intel quad core processors and your choice of two ATI of NVIDIA graphics cards. The Dual Socket Extreme Desktop, a.k.a. "Skulltrail” is aimed at the high end gamer and graphics professionals who are looking for a high-powered, expensive machine.
So what is Intel offering? A Desktop Board D5400XS and two Core-2 Extreme QX9775 processors. The Core 2 Extreme QX 9775 processor includes 12 MB of L2 cache, 1.6 MHz FSB, and four cores running at 3.2 GHz. For the real enthusiasts who really want extra speed, the processor's bus-ratio locks have been removed, so you really overclock. |

How much is this monster going to cost? The Intel Core 2 Extreme processor QX9775 is priced at $1,499 each. Estimated street pricing for the Intel Desktop Board D5400XS is $649. Which adds up to one expensive machine.
So who is going to use such an powerful expnsive machine? The Skulltrail platform is aimed at 3-D animators, digital audio artists, and high-definition video editors who create video games for consoles and desktops. Intel is planning to offer systems with the new platform include Armari, Boxx Tech, Digital Storm, Falcon Northwest, Maingear, Puget Systems, Scan, Velocity Micro, Vigor Gaming, Voodoo, and @Xi Computers.
