Dell Latitude Gets Core Duo

Dell has finally unleashed its Latitude D620, equipping it with Intel's latest technology and bringing much-needed power to its corporate mobility line of laptops. Along with its bigger sibling, the Latitude D820, the Latitude D620 will house modern and powerful Intel Core Duo processors. You may say Dell was a little late to the Core Duo game considering companies such as HP, Toshiba, and Lenovo have already incorporated these advanced chips into their designs. The wait was worth it, though, especially for travelers looking to stay connected while on the road.
To always stay in the loop, the D620 integrates 3G wireless. You can even choose your 3G flavor since the D620 supports both Verizon's EVDO ($179) or Cingular's HSDPA ($225) cellular modems (monthly service plans will cost you extra). The lightweight system weighs a mere 5.1 pounds, perfect for toting from one place to another. It also sports dual-pointing options—a pointing stick and touchpad. Wedged between the mouse buttons you'll find a fingerprint reader attached to a Trusted Platform Module (TPM), a boon for security-minded professionals.

The Latitude D620's 14.1-inch screen is smaller than the D820 (15.4 inches), and it's powered by Intel's integrated graphics which certainly won't satisfy 3D gamers. Road warriors, however, will appreciate the D620's built in Wi-Fi catcher device, activated via a hardware switch, that tells you if there's a nearby unprotected wireless network. It even works when the laptop is turned off.

It seems that the D620 won't disappoint in terms of battery life either. I was able to run some initial battery tests on the unit and the system yielded a lengthy time of 4 hours and 29 minutes—not too bad for a notebook this thin and light. Expect prices to start at $1,951.
