The founders of Skype and Kazaa are at it again. Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom, the famous duo, who introduced the world to p2p music and mp3 with Kazaa, and then went on to revolutionize telephones as we know it with Skype, have now moved on to TV.
IPTV (Internet Protocol TV, i.e. TV over the internet for those who are not familiar with the term) has been in the works for years. All of us are waiting for the ability to be able to watch the TV program we want, when we want, on our computer for FREE. Till now that option has been unavailable.
Youtube introduced a cool and efficient way of streaming TV, but the quality of the picture… well lets just say it's not really that good. Besides, no legal TV programs that are worth watching can be found on Youtube.
So these to geniuses sit down and decide to work there magic with the IPTV world. Their mission is quite clear - provide free, high quality, internet TV. The Venice Project is born.
This famous duo get a team of Engineers and start working in secret at first for over a year in Venice on the new project. Initially, no one knew what the Venice Project was, just that the successful Duo of Kazaa and Skype were back again.
During the summer of 2006, we finally found out that The Venice Project has something to do with IP TV. More rumors about beta testing start flying.
Fall of 2006 the first beta is released and pictures start popping up on the web.
By the end of 2006 the Venice project is up and running and more people are getting invitations to sign up.
January 2007 - JOOST is born as The Venice Project is renamed and the IPTV world will never be the same.
